v0.18.0NOTHING WIPED

A longer road home, real quests, and houses that look their trade

Nothing was wiped. Your character, bag, skills, claim and house are where you left them. This update makes building a homestead a real goal, gives builders a proper quest and dialog designer, lets you quest together in a party, and makes the game run a lot smoother in busy towns.

A homestead is a long goal now

A full homestead used to take about half an hour. It should now take many evenings, and every step should feel earned.

  • Trees and rocks take longer to swing at, and a swing can glance off: three in four land at first, up to 95% with levels and better tools. A miss is quiet, and your experience per hour is about the same as before.
  • Planks come two to a log (four from oak).
  • House kits, facings and stairs cost several times more, and pay 2.5 times the Crafting experience.
  • Building sites. Putting down a kit raises a scaffold with a work bar, like any workstation. The room is finished when the bar is full. Growing a claim stakes out the new border over a few minutes.
  • Bigger claims now cost coins too: 2,000, 6,000 and 15,000. Upkeep is 8 planks and 6 wheat a week, times 1, 3, 6 or 10 by claim size.
  • Gathering jobs while you are away, and thralls, now work at 15% of your pace.

Shops

  • Shops pay 10% of an item's value (food 5%).
  • The more of one thing you sell, the less a shop pays for it. The price recovers over a couple of hours. The shop window shows today's price.
  • Rare finds are worth double, and the first sapphire and bird's nest turn up sooner.

Little rewards along the way

  • A new homestead rank gets a banner, fireworks and a fanfare.
  • Pin a recipe to your screen to track what you still need for it.
  • Lucky bonus yields pop up in gold.
  • The shop counts up your takings as you sell.

Quests and dialog

  • Talking to someone now opens a dialog box along the bottom of the screen, with their portrait on the left and yours on the right. Text types itself out, and keys 1-9 pick an answer.
  • Every quest giver and story character has a painted portrait with moods, and your own portrait follows your look from the character creator.
  • Story characters are drawn in the world to match their portraits: the wizard's pointed hat, the baker's toque, the fisherman's sou'wester and more.
  • Quests can branch on your choices, remember what you said, ask you to come back and hand them in, let you pick a reward, run on a timer, repeat daily or weekly, and be abandoned.
  • New kinds of goals: collect, equip, use, interact, catch, build, and reach a level or skill.

Parties

  • Invite up to four friends to a party from a player's menu or with /invite. /party shows who is in it.
  • Kills and gathering count for everyone in the party nearby who has the same quest.
  • Share a quest with your party, and see each other's progress in the tracker.

Houses

  • Porches now hang their roof from the front wall of the house, on a post at each corner, instead of lying in front of the door. A porch can only go across the front of a room. Porches built on a side or back have been taken down and their kits returned to your bag.
  • The forge room, kitchen, workshop and kiln room now look their trade from outside: a stone forge bay, a serving hatch, open workshop doors and a brick kiln stack. Their fires glow at night.
  • Rooms get a dormer, big rooms a bay window, hallways ivy, and towers a pennant.
  • Rooms side by side share one continuous roof, with no seam or strip of grass between them.
  • Paintings, shelves and windows no longer show through a roof, and wide stations no longer poke through a side wall.
  • Things on a porch count as outdoors, and stepping onto the porch no longer lifts the house's roof.

Smoother

  • Towns full of houses draw many times faster. Walking through a big town no longer stutters.
  • Animals, farm plots, shadows, critters and night lights do less work off screen.

For builders

  • A new Story designer in the editor (F1, Quests, Designer): a quest graph where you drag lines to set what must come first, a dialog graph for each character with conditions, effects and locked answers, a "play from here" simulator, a flags list and a problems list that points out broken links.
  • Each quest can be handed in or finish by itself, with a world default you can set.
  • Pick a painted portrait for any character in the NPC tool.
