A fresh start, quests with stories, teleporters and ranks
The world has been reset. Everyone starts again on a fresh island:
- Kept: your account, your password, your characters' names and looks, and your friends list.
- Back to the start: skills, levels, bags, gear, coins and quests. Every character begins with the starter kit, as a new player does.
- Gone: claims, buildings, guilds and the market.
The update is a big one, so older versions are asked to update. The itch app does it for you, and the web version is already current.
Stories, quest NPCs and dialog
- Quests can now be told as storylines: chains of quests, one after another.
- Quest NPCs stand in the world. A gold ! over someone means they have a quest for you, and a ? means a quest of yours is waiting on them.
- Talk to them to get dialog with answers to choose. What you answer can start a quest, hand one in, or earn you a gift.
- A quest can have several goals: slay, gather, craft, harvest, talk to someone, deliver something or reach a place. It can pay coins, items and experience together.
- The quest log groups a storyline's quests under its name and shows your next goal.
Teleporters
- Builders can place teleporters around the world. Step up to one to see where it goes and what it costs, then channel for three seconds. Moving or taking a hit cancels it.
- It is free below level 10. After that it costs a few coins, more the farther you go, up to 60.
- There is a one-minute wait between jumps.
Ranks
- Press R (or Esc, then Ranks) for the leaderboards: total level, character level, combat, every skill, story quests finished and bosses slain.
- Your own row is highlighted, and you see your place even outside the top fifty.
- The boards update every minute. Staff aren't ranked.
Patch notes in the game
- What changed now shows in the game: from the main menu, from Esc, and once on its own after each update.
Fixes from our first big playtest32 changes
Fifty test players spent half an hour in a copy of the world, and a full review of the code went alongside them. This update fixes what they found.
Combat
- Your first blow lands as soon as you reach the enemy. Before, you stood there for over a second first. Blows after it come at the same pace as before.
- A fight against a creature you can't reach (standing in water, or on another level) now ends with "Couldn't reach that", instead of leaving you standing beside it forever.
- Boss rewards go to the players who landed a blow, not to everyone standing in the arena.
- Creatures no longer walk through house walls, over cliffs or into water.
Land claims
- Claims can no longer grow into each other. A new claim stone needs room for the claim to reach full size, so two fully grown claims never overlap.
- Guild access to your claim is now your choice. Tick "Open to my guild" on the land panel to let your guild's officers help run it. Claims start closed.
- A claim stone can't be planted inside someone else's room, and a new claim can't take in what another player left behind.
- An invitation to a claim is withdrawn if the person who sent it loses the right to invite.
- Claims can be renamed once a minute.
Trading, the market and shops
- Offering gear in a trade now offers particular pieces, and the other player sees exactly the piece they will get.
- Market listings expire after 7 days and come back to your bag, or a pile at your feet if the bag is full. The 20-listing limit now counts every character on your account. A stack you list is one listing.
- A character with market listings or unpaid sales can't be deleted until they are sold or taken back.
- The free starter tools are for players who have none anywhere: not in the bag, worn, in a chest, on the market or on the ground. With a full bag, the free tool lands at your feet.
- Upkeep and mending messages now say how many coins you have.
Chat and privacy
- Whispers, guild chat, bags, chests, trades and friend lists are now private. Only you receive yours.
- Only the game itself can send a "Game" message, and names like Game, Admin and Moderator are reserved.
- Names and chat lines can't carry hidden or control characters, so nobody can pass themselves off as another player with a look-alike name.
- Chat has a gentle speed limit, and quest and "while you were away" messages keep their own history, so a busy chat can't push them out.
The map
- The ground players walk on and the ground the server checks could disagree near spawn, after the map was changed. A tree could be drawn where the server had none ("Nothing to gather there"), and one spot of shallow water could strand you. They agree again, and they stay in step when the map changes.
- Doors can't be taken down while someone is inside the room, and anyone sealed in a room is now counted as stuck, so Unstuck gets them out.
- Clicking to walk is kept to a sensible pace, so nobody can slow the world down for everyone else.
Other fixes
- Two game windows on one account no longer log you out when you close one, or pay your time away twice.
- The game uses about a third of the data it used to, which also makes reconnecting faster.
- Kicks and bans take hold at once, even for a player who is already in the world.
- Items left on the ground stay as long as the newest thing dropped there.
- Crafting zero of something is refused instead of quietly making one.
The map editor
For builders:
- Painting ground now shows as you paint, not only when you let go.
- Fast strokes no longer leave gaps.
- A stroke is never lost when you let go over a panel or close the editor.
- Panels fit the screen at every size.
- Text is easier to read.
- The claim markers no longer cover the ground you're painting.
